I read a 'Before It Snows' excerpt

This is the very beginning of a short story that won me an Honourable Mention certificate from the prestigious 'Writers of the Future' contest. It was on the final table for judgement out of 1000 other short stories! I thought it might be helpful for folks who want to write something that -- at least -- puts you in the running for a win, and, entertaining for everyone else!
